As a longtime law enforcement officer, Steve knows that safety is the foundation of a healthy community. He will prioritize strong partnerships between police, residents, and community organizations to prevent crime and respond quickly when it occurs. Steve is committed to ensuring every family feels secure in their home, their street, and their city.

Steve supports growth that strengthens the community without losing its character. He will champion careful planning that balances economic development with preserving green space, protecting natural resources, and maintaining quality of life. Steve will ensure EL's growth benefits everyone—today and for generations to come.

STEVE
For more than 25 years, Steve Whelan protected and served East Lansing as a dedicated member of the ELPD—working as a patrol officer, detective, and trusted school resource liaison with East Lansing Public Schools. Steve’s commitment to public safety was matched by a passion for helping the most vulnerable, with a keen focus on child advocacy, human trafficking, and supporting survivors of sexual assault.
Beyond the badge, Steve spent 23 years as an adjunct professor at Lansing Community College, shaping future leaders with the same dedication and commitment found in his police work.
